Ive been living in Mississippi for about seven months and Ive been looking forward to the opportunity to play not only a Donald Ross course, but a course where some of the greatest legends and some of my heroes of golf have played like, Ben Hogan, Sam Snead & Byron Nelson. I had high hopes for the this course and while I wasnt completely let down, my round ended with the feeling that it could have been a better experience. The course is a interesting and challenging layout, most of the fairways were narrow and slightly undulating, but not severely. Numerous types of trees (live oak, palm, etc...) line and dot the fairways and in a few instances, they are in the middle of the fairway. There are a few small bunkers here and there, but not like some of the small beach resorts Ive seen in Arizona. Speaking of Arizona, Ive seen many a busy fairway, so this is a nice change of pace. Most of the greens were elevated, which I do enjoy, since I have a pretty good short game. Greens were small and fast, so an accurate putter is helpful as pin placements vary from easy to very tricky. Famously, Ben Hogan once said there were no 7 iron shots at Merion. Although, I didnt use every club in the bag, I used most, if I played here regularly, I would likely remove a club or two from my bag. If I played here weekly, I would likely remove my 5 iron, as I never used it. I mostly used my driver, 3 wood 3 & 4 hybrids, 8, 9, pitching & sand wedges & putter. I also used a 7 wood once. The course that I regularly play, I use the 5 iron now & then, especially on a couple of the par 4s. That said, there were some disappointments; the very first water station I came to was missing its water jug and the second station was as well. To add to that, a large sign at the clubhouse proclaimed "No outside beverages." Okay, but a least provide good ol water. As I made my way around the course (sort of) I noticed there were little to no signs for on-course direction, at least on the front nine. More than once, I found myself headed in the wrong direction. The pro shop had yardage books for sale ($5) which contained details for layout, but just a basic map of the layout was nowhere to be found. Ive played par 3 courses that did this better. Nickel and diming folks for every little thing comes off as greedy and can be a turn off. To compound the navigation challenges, some of the tees had more than one teeing area which added to confusion since the tee markers were so small and nearly blended in with the ground. Yardage makers were present at the tees, but even those just listed the hole number & yardages. Several holes had yardage markers at 150 yards which were helpful, but between those and stakes for roped off areas a few of the fairways looked like they had fences in them. I noticed this because my ball hit a couple of those stakes. Another thing I noticed were the frequent patches of bare ground, especially at the edges of some fairways and adjacent to cart paths. Great Southern is a course that wasnt built as a spectacle or to elicit a specific type of reaction, but more like something to learn from, enjoy & be savored. I will return, now that I have seen the layout and had some time to reflect. For my next round at Great Southern, Ill again book online to save some money, since the regular green fees compared to elsewhere are a bit high given the course conditions Ive previously described. If I were a casual golfer, Id probably pass on another round, as the annoyances would likely keep me from enjoying the course and my round.

The Great Southern Golf Club the best golf value within 200 miles. As the address [2000 Beach Drive, Gulfport, MS 39507] indicates it is literally on the Gulf of Mexico. Four golf holes are on the Gulf. The course is in year 3 of a major improvement to the greens and fairways. If you havent played the course since July 2015, youll be pleasantly surprised to see how good it is. It is a fun course for all levels of golfers. None of the holes require a long shot to clear hazards so it is more enjoyable to play. Good golfers will still need to hit good shots to score well due to lateral hazards and small greens. The Clubhouse offers stunning sunrise and sunset views over the Gulf and offers breakfast and lunch daily. It is located where the Biloxi and Gulfport city line meets the beach, so it is close to the major hotels, casinos, restaurants, and the Edgewater Shopping mall. In full disclosure, I am a member and perhaps biased, but Ive tried to be honest in my assessment. Hopefully, I can give it 5 stars later this year!

If you are a golfer, and are looking for a nice course , you should skip this course. It may only be like 25 or 30 bucks for 18 with a cart, but you get what you pay for. This may have been one of the worse if not the worst course I have ever played. Greens were rock hard, super slow the tee bbox had nothing but weeds on them . Awful course. Pay a little extra some where else this place event at 30 I felt cheated. And I have played courses from your municipal courses to whistling straits and Pinehurst, dont play awful

Lifetime golfer. Played all over. This is a nice course. And it is old school country clubish. You can score if you do what you are supposed to do and you will find enough trouble if you dont hit the ball straight -- or cant bend it some on keys holes. Yeah theres burn patches on some greens but just move the ball over a bit. God I hate whiners -- go drop $450 at Pinehurst 2 if you want southern perfection! Great staff. Great food. Great view. Surprisingly no bugs.

November 11, 2014. Had breakfast at this restaurant. The price was ok. The food was horrible. Lisa the bar mgr was friendly . Pro shop guy was snooty to say the least. Very bad overall experience. The grounds and course are not very nice compared to other golf courses Ive seen. The location and history are very good but the actual experience doesnt come close to living up to this heritage.

Really fast greens for the area, reasonable prices and an enjoyable course overall. Only problem was the advertised price was different by $5 but still reasonable. I was told you could not walk the course but that must be wrong because several players were walking. I will return.

The greens needs a little improvement but overall the course was really fun to play. The view was beautiful also. The service there is great. Cindy, the beverage cart girl, was very friendly and such a pleasure to have around. I will most certainly come back time after time.

This was one of the worst courses I have ever played. The fairways were a cow pasture and the greens were terrible. The layout was awful and somewhat confusing. The 9th hole ended nowhere near the clubhouse. Do not play this course. It does not deserve any star!

I really enjoyed playing the course and it had some minor issues but all in all a very pleasurable course to get in some practice on. I would reccomend this course to anyone wanting to play some golf for exercise and relaxation.
