Played on a 38 degree day in december, was paired with a member and almost broke 90 had I not doubled on the last hole. Im about a 18 handicap. From the time I got there check-in was a breeze, there was a 19 year old girl working in the pro-shop that stated to me, "Let me get you a cart, hold-on, and literally ran into the shed to grab a cart for me. That kind of hustle is worthy of a tip, and I gave her one. There was no wind the entire day but certain holes seemed to have that prevailing 4 mph breeze that just made figuring things out a little harder. Beautiful wide open course from designers whom I have played certain courses before. What a day. We finished cart path only (a twosome behind a twosome) in about 3 hours 50 minutes. A lot of risk-reward holes which made me realize playing from the mens champ tees (2nd farthest back, around 6510 yards), certain holes should put the driver away and take the 3 wood out. #10 is a good example, those traps in front of the fairway got me. The greens must be ridiculously difficult during the summer as there were a lot of contoured undulating greens but the speed was good for the winter and there were a fair number of 3 putts on the course, including 18 which I need to par to hit 90. Approach shots you are way better off being below the hole, a lot of the greens on the back especially slope back to front. The food was great at the restaurant and the locals there who are regulars/members are really friendly. I will definitely be back, even though it is a good 45 minutes away (all highway) from Madison. Got a great deal on golfnow which I coudlnt even believe myself! They gave me a small bucket of range balls which just got me warmed up enough to hit em straight the first few holes. A ball on #5 mysteriously got lost from the middle of the fairway into the mounds 30 yards ahead and to the left of me, and for ghe life of me, coudlnt find it in 5 minutes. Thats what makes architects unique and difficult. Links are wide open but shotmaking and (the wind) on most days i could imagine wouldve easily turned my 91 into a 95. Some of the par 4s on the back, and there are 3 of them leading to 18, are Driver, 3-wood, and a chip. On the augusta hole I somehow missed the huge fairway and had to sand-wedge backwards chop out of my ball from the weeds, then I put a 5-wood over the creek somehow from about 265 out that was plugged right on the other side of the river. Highlights including my pars on #11 (Par 5- deep dogleg right with bunkers on both sides of the fairway on the second shot), which was once again Driver, 3-wood, and full wedge and a two putt (below the hole). Some of the par threes except for #2 and #8, I was able to pick the right club (two 5-irons) and be on the green (but below the ridge on #2, and pin-high in the rough directly to the right of green on #8). #9 was a long hole with trouble (a lake) left and almost behind the green, small green where i took the 5-hybrid out on the second shot about 230 away and left it right in front of the green on purpose. then a chip and two putt. Some of the fairways were a bit chopped up and the general public needs to replace their divots but Im sure it will look splendid again in the spring. Same with the greens and ball marks. Also a lot of beer cans that should be cleaned up around some of the holes on the back. must be from good times in the summer.

I booked a tee time at 5pm for the next day. Im on the tee box ready to go and some attendant comes up to me as says I booked 4 and only have 3, and I need to go settle up in the golf shop. They told me I need to pay for the 4th, since he didnt show because they could have sold that time. My reply was, I was never informed of the cancellation policy over the phone and the tee time was within a 24 hour window at the time of booking. I can see this policy on a Weekend morning, but this is ridiculous at 5pm on a weeknight. Most courses, if they are so desperate for revenues will ask for your credit card, and explicitly tell you, it will be charged. The manner and professionalism amongst the staff was seriously lacking. Ive worked at country clubs for over 10 years and would never have seen anyone treated this way. It seems like this policy comes from Management who see the bottom line in terms of dollars instead of a person. You need to understand how to treat customers and not argue with them over a thing like this. I would not go back to this place, just based on the lack of professionalism and attitude of the course staff and management.

I see some less than five star reviews and most seem petty and arent related to the course. Staff was friendly. There are maintainers on the course but thank God for that! Every golf course should have such great maintenance. I played today (5-25-16) and the course is pristine. Rough is challenging and hit but fairways are great and very fair. Areas around greens play like golf courses and not most public garbage. There are paved paths for carts so there arent ruts and dirt patches all over. Every green is consistent (albeit slick). It is a top five public course under $100 within 100 miles. The design is interesting and challening. Most greens are guarded with fairly deep bunkers or with elevation changes. Id recommend the red tees for anyone without a handicap because the slope there is even a 121. Unless you know you can hit mid and long irons into greens you are best off on the forward tees. The next set plays 6172 yards and will challenge a mid handicapper for sure. They have two longer sets as well. Overall, a definite 5 star course on upkeep and layout.

Once you start getting near $100 for a round of golf, you better be something extremely special. Not the case here. Course is nice and well maintained, but Ive played many courses in similar condition for $45-$50. I could see $70-$75 max weekend morning. Play was existentially slow and playing at 4:30 mid summer, we thought wed have no issue finishing with daylight. We had to rush 17 and hit blindly on 18, having one small light up by the clubhouse guide the way home. Ive read some other reviews and cant help but agree that staff was less than enthusiastic, almost snobby. We are paying your salary! Booked on golf now and staff seemed bothered, as if we were getting one over on them. Perhaps its location being close to New York makes them justify high prices, but Id jump over to Morgan Hill or Riverview for less and have a similar, if not better experience. All in all, I would play it again, being thats its a nice course but Ill do my best to ignore the help and walk as much as possible to help take up some of the wait time.

I would give the course a 4 stars but you need to take off 3 stars for their utter lack of service and the fact that they really dont care about their customers. On a day where it was close to 90 degrees, they had one jug of water on the 5th hole. The jug on 13 was empty and the beverage cart was stuck in the garage because the door wasnt working (which no one bothered to tell us). With a little ingenuity and some sympathy for their patrons, they should have figured something out. When I called in after the 13 tee to ask that they bring out some water, I was told no. I guess I should have told them I was going to pass out, so could they please call an ambulance but the not so nice person in the pro shop probably would have told me to pass out and they would get to me when they could. They are lucky someone didnt get sick or pass out from dehydration. Architects Club - you should be ashamed of yourself!
