My class just went on a trip here today it was amazing i learned many new things each step of the tour has an amazing thing about. First we started of with an fun scavenger hunt. finding fools gold and very expensive rocks. Its where the miners lockers would be and place to hang their clothing. Then we headed off to the fluorescent glow in the dark room (rainbow tunnels) with rocks, which one of the best parts because my teeth and nails were glowing too. Also we got to touch some big rocks that were space rocks and the most weird one was the dinosaur poop rock. But, the fun didnt end there, we also went to where all the miners worked, finding about their system of communications through bells, and how they used their explosives. something that i also found very interesting is that they used candles to work so if it went off they would need to wait till the end of the day. We also got to keep one florescent rock ! Then we had lunch and had time to shop inside the wonderful gift shop. Their were many kinds of rocks to buy but it was a little bit high for my budget, so it wont really matter cause you get more rocks after this. Finally we have an amazing rock collection hunt! We get a rock collection box and we have to find these 6 rocks that is scattered around on the floor matching with the description in the box. The rocks were, Granite, Slate, Marble, Coal, Baslite, and sandstone. That was an amazing trip with amazing people who were rock experts. So if you are planning on a rock trip you would really want to go HERE at Sterling Hill Mining Museum in 30 Plant St, Ogdensburg, NJ! Enjoy

Worth the trip and more. This mine has the largest variety of minerals in one place on the planet earth, and it is right here in NJ. Who knew before the Travel Channel found them. The flourescent minerals will impress you. If you go to the geology exhibit of any museum in the world, you will find flouresent minierals from this area. It is a non-profit organization and the tour guides do an amazing job instilling a love of science and chemistry. They are constantly enhacing the experience with new exhibits. The Living Periodic Table of the elements makes chemistry real and fun. Dont miss the rock collection which was donated by Mr Oreck (Oreck vaccuum) after he was so impressed witht he place. There is an observatory on the grounds and if the night is clear you can arrange a view of the planets. Since it is non-profit, the costs are very reasonable. That includes the costs of items from their snack bar and rock shop.

This was a good tour. The place is.very interesting as an old zinc mine. The pathways are good and level and the place is good. Ample parking. Although we went after a few days of constant rain and there was rain coming down through seams. They have some interesting fluorescent displays and a history of the mine. If you look at the lockers they have names and some dates for some of the old miners. They have a small snack bar as well. The kids had fun so it was good in my book. Also seeing the flooded mine shafts and the water table made it pretty cool.

Just got back from tour with our school group 5th grade and the kids all loved it.. the rock discovery center is a great learning experience. The tour guide was very knowledgeable about mining and minerals as well as helpful. One of the kids wasnt feeling well and he made sure the kid was made comfortable the entire rest of the tour.. Thanks Bob....Bring a light jacket as the tunnel part of the tour is 54 deg all year round... The rocks that glow are really cool....We will go back... Great Job guys..

Отличный музей для всей семьи. Замечательная коллекция минералов и кристаллов, самых волшебных расцветок + тех что светятся в ультрафиолете. Тур по старой шахте познавателен для детей.

Went on the two-hour tour here with a large group of people with children. Ages ranged from newborn to toddler and pre-teen. Tour moved along enough to keep the young ones attention. Tons of information and interesting facts, everyone was entertained. Thanks to our tour guide, Tony!! The gift shop had a very large selection and everything was very reasonably priced. Will be coming back again.

This is a really fun place with an old mine to visit on guided tour, plus Minerals Museum and "glowing in the dark minerals" (short wave ultraviolet light) mini-museum as part of the guided tour. For additional fee you can pick your own minerals/fossils to take home. The guided tour is only once a day at 1:00 pm sharp (at least it was), so check their website for more info.

We drove 2.5 hrs to get here and it was so worth the drive. Tony was our tour guide and he was amazing. So much to do and see. Great place to bring the family. The mine was wonderfully cool inside on a very hot day. Come early so you have time to explore the mine inside and out! They have a gift shop and a place to get snacks and something to drink.

Our tour guide was just a little too enthusiastic about zinc and it started to go from an amusing quirk to incredibly annoying very fast. That said, the museum itself is wonderful and informative. Everyone was very nice and other than grinding our teeth through most of the tour it was a great experience.

This is one of the greatest attractions, both historical and scientific, in the entire Garden State. The extensive and in-depth tour is well worth the low price of admission. If you really want to make it a memorable day, explore the mine dump and take home a few pounds of mineral specimens.

You can collect worldwide minerals as well as fluorescents. The gift shop also has lots of neat items. I enjoy going on the last Sunday of the month, when the whole property can be explored. Ive given it 5 stars due to the value for the money spent. A fascinating place for children.

Very fun tour to check out the old mining operation. Check out all the glowing rocks they have there. They dont call it the Mineral capital of the world for nothing. Just remember to count when the tour guide tells you to count! Its the only way to get out of the mine!!

Wow I have never been undercharged for entertainment in my life, here is a first. The mine tour is way under priced. 2.5 hours of a live version of the History Channel. I am 60 years old and I brought my wife here on her 60 birthday. We had a GRRRRRRRRRRRRR8 time.
