We ate at the Blue Gate when we went to see the Isaacs. The Isaacs were wonderful ... the food was not! We ordered the boiled dinner of ham, potatoes, carrots, onions and cabbage since it was a nice way to start fall-ish eating. Our experience was memorable, but in a terrible way. We waited a longer-than-normal time for our food to come. The waitress kept apologizing as she filled our water glasses twice. When the food finally came, the potatoes were fine, the carrots were not; we found hardly any ham; the cabbage was so undercooked we could not cut it with our table knives. All in all, it was a disaster. We had a coupon for half-off of one meal when we bought one. The bill did not show that and we had to show the cashier that it was not written as a half-price meal on the bill. When my husband told them about the food not being what it should, the cashier just said, "Sorry." We will not eat there when we attend "Josiah" this month.

Authentic homestyle food, excellent service, at an affordable price. The Blue Gate Restaurant was recommended to us by friends, so my husband and I took our out of town family to the restaurant after a very hot 97 degree June morning of shopping, at the Shipshewana Flea Market. We were first in line for the lunch buffet. The room was nicely air conditioned. Our server brought us ice cold water as we were being seated. We appreciated that. The food was fresh, piping hot, and SCRUMPTIOUS! I especially enjoyed the fried chicken and their homestyle chicken stuffing. The building is beautiful, spotless, and has a very nice welcoming atmosphere. Check out the bakery after your meal. Strawberries are in season and their strawberry pie is out of this world. We will definitely go back.

Well, the food was good but we came in to redeem my birthday reward sent from Bluegate Restaurant. No where on the coupon did it state any restrictions but when we ordered we were told that the onion ring appetizer was not included. They also balked at the fact that my husband and I were splitting a large meal and then a dessert. We are senior citizens and we split all the time to save money and calories. If there are restrictions then put that on the birthday gift reward you send out. Seems like people just make up the rules as they wish. The waitress was really nice and she was just relaying messages from management.

The Blue gate restaurant is in the heart of the Amish shopping district in Shipshewana. There is a theater in the building as well. The menu can be ala carte or family style. All the food was excellent, with the sampler platter being a way to try lots of things. The ham was especially tasty. The meatloaf was good. The chicken pot pie was bland but for the fact that the gravy was extra salty. The real reason to come is for the pie. There are a multitude of possibilities, all of which are very tasty with excellent flaky crusts. I highly recommend the sugar cream pie Stop by, even if its only for some pie.

We have been eating at the Blue Gate for 30 years. We will not go again. We chose the buffet. It was disappointing, all the food was flavorless. I can not believe they used fake mashed potatoes. Beef was stringy and blah. No sweet potato casserole. Every thing was overcooked. Salad bar was okay. They should be ashamed of the deserts. Always in the past they had good fruit pies, now they just have tasteless stuff, with fluff on them The price was a little high. We did not go back for seconds. Over all Shippeswanna has been getting so commericial that we do not enjoy it anymore.

I would have been more pleased if there was a greater selection of meats. The only meat served was fried chicken and some type of beef noodle dish. For 2 people our bill was almost $40. The food offered did not warrant such a bill. The chicken thighs and legs were good, the chicken breast was very dry. The other selections of food consisted of slightly runny mashed potatoes, gravy, chicken stuffing, a couple other vegetables and a minimal salad bar. Although the help was very good and polite, I doubt we will come back.

Choose the buffet...only after we we told by the hostess that the buffet had the same meats as the menu style..and that was not true we were hoping to get their exceptional ham and this was not available on the buffet. Another issue being that there were two sets of people waiting before us we were a party of four and a party of five came in after us and was seated before everyone who was waiting before them. Very unhappy with the situation.

Excellent fried chicken! Also enjoyed the noodles, mashed potatoes, shredded beef, an excellent salad and peanut butter pie. Our waitress was wonderful! Didnt give it 5 stars because there wasnt much organization in bussing tables and seating guests. Hostess told us it would take one minute to wipe off a table. 15 minutes later, we were still standing there, waiting on someone to clean off a table. Worth the wait though.

Buffet was very very good, but atmosphere just so-so. Wait staff was not very attentive. Wanted to take the little loaf of bread that was given to us with our meal home, but wait staff refused a container or even something to wrap it with. :( It isnt like we had full plates of food we were planning on sliding into a to go box! Just the little loaf of bread that came with the buffet meals.

Walking in its nice. But there menu does not have a variety. I ordered a meat loaf dinner the meat was orange it tasted awful, an I actually felt sick to my stomach all afternoon an evening. The prices are way to high for the food you get. I wont go back I will drive to Middlebury to the Das Dutchman Essenhaus any day where theres GOOD food! !!!!

What a place. On the first floor is a traditional restaurant and a buffet downstairs. We decided the restaurant better met our needs. Service was excellent, even during the dinner rush. Meals included classics like meatloaf, chicken and noodles, and delicious sides of carrots and mashed potatoes. Dessert was seasonally fresh blueberry pie. Wow!

Great food, I personally love the chicken, we come here just for that! Good quality food and plenty of local shops to walk around afterward. They do offer a family style or individual orders. There is a bakery and gift shop as well. Check it out, youll enjoy it. PS: traffic can be brutal, use maps to navigate side streets on busy days.

We went to the buffet and the wait staff was Great, the food was better than we were expecting. Went back for breakfast, they were slow, asked waitress if the Gravy was homemade - all I could say was someone must have dropped a whole container of salt in it. They did apologize and took it off the bill. I question their honesty.
