I visited Chicago from out of town and made a trip to the Green Mill looking forward to hearing renowned Jazz/Blues musicians My first impression of the place was less than stellar. The bouncer was unbelievably rude and talked to me/my friend like he was a prison guard all while asking for a whooping $12 cover charge. He barked at me to turn off my cell phone. Made a**hole remarks to my foreign friend. The guy acted like he never used the words "please" and "thank you" in his entire life. You would think a jazz bar with of audience of primarily affluent adults who hire a greeter that was more cordial/well mannered. Instead they welcomed everybody like some biker wannabe leather jacket prick. If it wasnt for the hour trip I made out there I would have turned around and left. This is coming from someone who was a doorman in college for four years. The bartenders were only slightly more friendly, but none of them even attempted to smile and treated my drink orders like an inconvenience. They were fast with the drinks though. My advice to the owners. FIRE THE DOORMAN and hire someone with an IQ above 70 when half your crowd has an IQ about 110. Also investing in some happy pills for the bartenders wouldnt too hurt either. Besides those qualms I was impressed with the venue. Although it was small, it had a lot of character. Bathrooms were a little dirty, but I was too imbibed with music/booze to even care that much. The jazz musicians were outstanding.

Are you looking to drink back in time? Then this is the place for a straight up martini and a little jazz music. This was one of the places that Al Capone use to hang out and drink at. In fact, if you want to sit in his favorite booth then you still can because it is still here. Capone was not a great guy but he is part of the history of Chicago and the mob. He was a public enemy yet he hung out and socialized with the people of Chicago. Capone would never survive in modern America. He is one of those icons that will live on forever. The bar is old so dont come here expecting a fancy jazz club. It probably hasnt been remodeled in over 70 years. There is a cool Schlitz Beer statue at the bar and I hear its an original. Capone never allowed any other beer to be poured here. He might punch me in the face for drinking my Milk Stout today. I sometimes miss the times when a bar would have just one beer. It made ordering a beer easy. Now I need a book to order a beer. So if youre looking to have a drink in a historic place in Chicago then this is the place. They also have live music but I would call them first in order to find out who is performing and at what time shows start.

Theres a cover to listen to the band on Saturday evenings, and probably most evenings. My friends and I just wanted to stop in and say that we had drinks at the same bar that Al Capone used to frequent--- I mistakenly said Al Pacino when telling my out of town friend, and he kindly did not point out my blunder.
The bartender confidently told us that he could make a meaner cocktail than anyone else in the city, ad when I asked for something good, he couldnt get a concrete answer out of me because I wanted whatever was most popular, which he said meant that I didnt know what I wanted. Anyway, my roomie and friend both got old-fashioneds and both said it was the best old-fashioneds that theyve ever had. The concotion I got was just okay. I thought I could say that I wanted gin or rum and something sweet and that would be enough, but apparently not. So maybe after I get it figured out, Ill go back. Maybe I should have just ordered a gin and tonic. NI

Round-topped tables adorned with white table linens and a single centerpiece candle face the stage; leather-clad booths for a handful of people are located posterior, with diner-style booths filling the sides. The dimly lit, sensual room is saturated with velvet and deep red hues.
Before the show starts, the atmosphere is convivial and lively. Friends share jokes over drinks, families treasure their time together, and young love birds share in the romance.
As Dave picks up the microphone, a hush falls over the audience. The last few pictures are snapped, the phones are set to silence mode. Dave doesnt need to remind everyone to be quiet; we are all in the moment already. The band is ready to start the show.
The sultry, sexy notes of the saxophone fill the space. The piano kicks in with its lyrical genius. The drums maintain the beat. Let the improvisation begin.
For 4 hours, the Green Mill becomes our home away from home.
