This is one of Cass Gilberts Gothic buildings commissioned by Woolworth at the height of his business empire (after 300 stores were installed). Once the tallest building in NYC and now a historical landmark. The building was the first to offer co-located luxury residence and commercial space in NYC creating a city within a city for the citys elite. Stocked with a barber shop, Romanesque pool and spa, as some of the amenities. The lobby and balcony are Romanesque cathedral nave inspired marble, gold leaf, crystal mosaic vaulted ceilings all culminating to 2 stunning murals of Christian inspired allegorical representations of Commerce and Labor. Very intricate detail including a few gargoyles some representing Woolworth and Gilbert. If you are fortunate to get/request Barbara Christen, architectural historian and resident Gilbert expert, you will get a thorough analysis of the building, the period, and the majesty of the buildings splendor.

I had the pleasure of going to a tour of the lobby courtesy of the Google Local Experts program. Our tour guide, Barbara, was fantastic; extremely knowledgeable about the building itself, the architect, and the history of the city at the time the Woolworth building was constructed. The lobby, which is a historical landmark, is breathtakingly beautiful, but is closed to the public unless you take a private tour. I also had the pleasure of visiting the mezzanine for a close up view of the terra cotta grotesques and a great overview of the vaulted arches. As such dozens of tourists come to peer in through the glass doors. I highly recommend taking the tour of the "Cathedral of Commerce" as it is a once in a lifetime experience!

This building is getting renovations on the outside and hopefully they will be half as beautiful as the inside of the building The front desk team are fantastic, knowledgeable and willing to help with needs from where to go to helping the elderly and disabled get in and out. The elevators work fast and efficient. The many tourists wanting photos of the landmark are asked to stay outside keeping inside impeccably clean on all the floors and in bathrooms. I didnt visit anyplace other than for my appointment but the office was friendly clean and had the greatest views of Lower NYC!

Definitely recommend taking the tour of the Woolworth Building Lobby. Theres a lot to take in and without a guide youre at a loss to understand the significance of the mosaics and little gargoyles throughout. You also wouldnt get the perspective of what it must have been like for this to have been the tallest building in New York for a while and the relevance of who Woolworth was and what he brought to the retail landscape.

A historic building in the heart of downtown, this building is home to many companies sharing floor space. The lobby is one of the most beautiful around, adorned with gold and art much like an old European church or something. Tourists get kicked out daily trying to take photos so be quick ;) Pay attention to the outside decorations as there is a troop of gargoyles watching from above!

The Woolworth Building - niesamowity, górujący nad City Hall wieżowiec. Polecam usiąść w parku z kubkiem kawy i popatrzeć na niego.

I was privileged to have an after-school job here in the 90s. The building is breath-taking and worth a look for anyone with an even a minimal interest in art, architecture, history, or urban planning. The basis of its nickname, "The Cathedral of Commerce," is evident from the moment you walk inside.

You probably wouldnt be able to go further than lobby if you dont work or have an appointment in the building, but even in the lobby you could see wonderful murals and mosaics on the walls, balconies, ceiling and the stairs. And sculpted embellishments make you feel like in a gothic cathedral.

The architecture and lobby alone can be subjects of books. Intricate gargoyles outside, stained glass ceiling inside. Bas relief walls, artistic depiction of commercial trade representing centuries. A beautiful building. Elevators are small though (only drawback)

Magnifique gratte-ciel, à la hauteur de la mégalomanie (et de légo) de celui qui a ordonné sa construction.

NOT OPEN FOR VISITORS so you are stuck looking at the great architecture from the outside. Great historic building among the nuevo-construction. Ive always wanted to sneak in but dont want to end up in GITMO after they catch me.

Book the tour; the lobby is fantastic! We took the 90 minute tour and it flew by - so much to see, and lots of interesting stories to hear. If youve any interest in New Yorks skyscrapers, this one is for you.

El edificio por fuera y de lejos está bien. Pero no dejan entrar al vestíbulo. Una pena.

One of NYs most spectacular buildings even though, at 80 stories, it is often overlooked. Lobby is treasure of architecture parlant, but getting inside requires, regretably, careful planning.

It will remind you how much thought and planning went into buildings at the beginning of the 20th century, and will make you wonder when our current era of soulless glass architecture will end.

Great building if you get to tour inside you can witness and marvel at the historic art. In most movies showing the downtown area next to the world trade you can spot the green tip building.

Its quite remarkable to look up at this landmark and to realize that it was once the worlds tallest buildings. It has soul without being tacky, so unlike skyscrapers today.

Enjoyed looking round the place as part of some wacky new york tour. The level of detail surprised me . Wish more buildings were like this.

A stunning tarra-cotta and glass sky scraper is a prime example of neo-gothic architecture from the turn of the century.
