While the performance of A Christmas Carol at the Civic Theatre last night was terrific and the venue just wonderful, I was equally struck and disheartened by what was missing. As much as I enjoyed the holiday show, and I very much did, I was left appalled to see that it appeared to be an all-white production. In a city as diverse, smart and thoughtful as Grand Rapids, there would seem to be no good reason for that. While mid-1800s England may have been predominantly, if not entirely, white, 21st century west Michigan is not. Production companies routinely cast members of all races and backgrounds in any number of roles these days, so casting with no regard for the diverse population here seems thoughtless and questionable. Unless I see that this group has at least a consideration toward inclusiveness, I would hesitate to ever attend any other shows at this theater.

Goodness Elaine, I hope you dont have any theatrical ambitions because youd be blackballed for making a comment like that even though it could generate some constructive discussion. In all fairness one does not have to look like a magazine model or have the ideal body weight inorder to be given a chance there to improve their self-esteem by exercising their creativity..otherwise theyd be attacking everyone and everything including your own mother whod been married 50 years.

The Civic Theatre is a great combination of teaching and entertainment! Year round there are camps for local kids, and at nights there are performances of new and classical plays and musicals! The facilities, both the performance hall and spaces for rehearsals and class are wonderful, and everything is kept at a reasonable price.

The talent his places pools is amazing. I only hope one day they will get paid for their work. Go see any show, and I promise even if they show is not your style, you wont be disappointed by the talent. Not to mention this theatre is an overall experience, it really is quite beautiful. Go treat yoself!

We just saw Les Mis at the GR Civic, it reminded why I love live theater! It was a terrific show .. such talent! a Standin O and well deserved! Ive seen LM at least 4 times and this show impacted me like no other! Bruce, Scott and cast..your efforts are appreciated! Bravo!

OMG, love, love this place! We participate in the school, have volunteered and gone there to watch shows! Its definitely to notch, we recently went to a Broadway show in NYC and its pretty darn comparable! The sets costumes and talent in these shows are great!

Civic does some nice productions. The location has parking close by with plenty of downtown options for before or after. My kids enjoy the kid productions. They are usually fun and well done. The lighting and sets are usually phenomenal.
