Its well worth navigating the sometimes perplexing streets of Gloucester for this take-in. It takes this Culture Vulture at least an hour and a half to " do " the museum, which is a must-see for fans of marine art in general and the work of American luminist Fitz Henry Lane (aka Fitz Hugh Lane) in particular. For the tourist intent on making every minute of his/her vacation count, there are nearby a number of intriguing shops--like the American Ship Model Gallery, recently relocated from Salem--and several restaurants. And its a short drive from the museum neighborhood to the North Shore Art Association as well as the Rocky Neck Art Colony.

A fabulous Hidden Gem in downtown Gloucester. We expected a two or three room Museum in a home. This is a major Museum facility in a modern building located over three different floors and connected to a historical home that is available for tours with a guide as well. Theres a great amount of seafaring exhibits including lighthouses, boats and Marine paintings, but also exhibits related to printmaking, music-making, and photography. This Museum is on a par with the Peabody Essex Museum, but of course much smaller compared to that amazing facility.

This is such a great museum for such a small town. There are lots of Asian artifacts dating back to the times when Gloucester was trading directly with Asia. There is a whole room of paintings by Gloucester artist, Fitz Hugh Lane, as well! There are many pieces of art from the fishing industry, but my favorite piece in the museum is one of Walker Hancocks studies for his sculpture for the Pennsylvania Railroad WWII Memorial.

Rich and eclectic collection. Painting includes single biggest Fitz Henry Lane collection; Marsden Hartley, John Singer Sargent, Winslow Homer, an AMAZING riff on the goddess Diana by Umberto Romano. Giant Fresnel lens fills a whole room, amazing. A Harborfront diorama made for the 1892 Columbian exhibition.

Nice combination of local contemporary art, older art (many beautiful paintings by Fitz Hugh Lane), and dioramas and artifacts highlighting Gloucesters seafaring history, including the sloop that was used in the first solo Atlantic crossing.

It is a must for Cape Ann visitors. The Lane gallery alone is worth a trip, but they have much more including some great maritime collections and research library.
