John Hughes, PGA "Professional"? I am a frequent customer of the driving range and the golf course and I have never had such a poor experience. This has to do with Mr. Hughess underlying racist white american ways. Let me explain.... On the evening of April 13th, my 9 year old son and I wanted to hit some balls. So, we went to tilden to do just that. I walk into the proshop and Mr. Hughes was tending to another gentleman. I dont know this customers name. However, it is very apparent that English is not his first spoken language. It appears this person was having trouble with the ball machine that he tried to use his prepaid key on. It didnt dispense any balls. I fully understood what he was saying. Mr. Hughes acted like he didnt understand, maybe he did, maybe he didnt. Mr. Hughes finally asked, how much did you try to dispense? The customer didnt fully understand but finally got around to understanding and stated the amount. Mr. Hughes proceeds to say, "You know, you have learn to speak English here. Were in America you know. We speak English here." That was so offensive and unnecessary. Mr. Hughes, did you know his situation? Maybe he just moved here? Maybe visiting? Whatever the reason, there was absolutely no excuse for your remarks and I am appalled at that kind of attitude here in the greater bay area. A melting pot of cultures. You remind me of that person who will say Im not a racist but all the while, under your breath and in the back of your head, the thoughts are. I wanted to enroll my son in a golf camp here, but will not as long as hes involved with it.

Ive always enjoyed golfing at Tilden - nicely laid out course, ok or even good quality, and a fun experience with all the hills and giant redwoods. However, I played here on Saturday and had my worst experience yet. I booked a tee time 2 days in advance through the Tilden Park website. Just a single. I show up on Saturday morning and theyve scheduled be as a fivesome. Really? Ive been playing golf for 15 years and this is the first time Ive ever been scheduled as a fivesome at a public course. At a private course, sure...all the members know the course and the pace of play isnt impacted. Not so at Tilden. There were at least 2 other fivesomes out there including 1 ahead of us. We started 20 minutes late and the round took 5.5 hours. Brutal. Nice enough guys that I was paired with but it was only the fact we were all shooting 90 or less than kept us from slowing everyone else down. I understand that American Golf is trying to squeeze out as much revenue as possible on the weekends but to schedule a single at a time when there is already a foursome scheduled is just plain obnoxious and rude. If they had told me that when I was booking it I could have gone elsewhere but they didnt tell me until I showed up. I will not be going back to Tilden until I understand theyve fixed this. Unless you want a 5.5 hour round, I would suggest you do too.

Nice area for a course. Ive been coming here for the last three years and have met some great people during my rounds. Overall the experience, seen the cost to play here, is positive. There are, however three shortfalls with the facility: 1. The Grill/food services are absolutely horrible considering this has a Berkeley address. Additionally, when you finish your round in the evening the bar closes early so youre not able to eat or drink. The wines offered at the bar are un-drinkable which is surprising seen how many wine drinkers I meet on the course that would like a decent glass of wine. 2. The range perpetually finishes balls. Over the last two years there have been several excuses for the situation from "we dont have enough balls" to, most recently, "the ball picker needs repairing". What is even more confusing is that they lowered the price of the players club fees. Can I pay a little more in order to guarantee the availability of range balls? 3. Slow play is making playing this course impossible to play in under 4hrs. Too many players that dont have the ability. Whats even more impressive is that there are no Marshals.

Played this course on 4/2/17 with some friends who had not played it before. Needless to say this will be the last time myself and my friends will play this course. The greens were in great shape so I will give credit when due, however everything else was almost unplayable for the fact that the course needs to be properly mowed. The rough was about 5-6 inches deep, no joke. They mowed the fairway and left the excess grass on the fairway and rough so finding your ball even when hitting straight down the middle was a chore. The fairway was even in bad condition because they either dont know what they are doing when mowing it or refuse to cut it to the length of what it should be. It was rare to have a clean second shot and the friends I play with shoot in the mid to low 70s.

The employees went out of their way to be rude from the moment we showed up. Its too bad because the course was nice with amazing views. Although they should have closed the course due to a previous week of rain turning the place into one big mud pit. So, rude staff and should have let the course dry. One of the marshals even came uncomfortably close to me while cracking passive aggressive jokes about the pace of our play. Its one thing to ask us to play faster or let play through but that was uncalled for. No one was behind us, no one complained and we werent in a hurry so we were playing casual but not too slow. No need to get aggressive in my opinion. Would not go back. Id give 0 stars if I could.

Tilden Park Golf Course is a beautiful course. However, their time-spacing between flights is much too close. This results in a lot of frustrating waits at the tee when there is a slightly slow flight ahead, and this happens much too often. It detracts from being able to enjoy the game. Such bad practice loses them a lot of players... what a waste!!

The slowest round of golf you can find in the Bay Area. Even though course management is aware that rounds will take approximately 6 hours there is still no marshal on the course. When I asked how the pace of play was today, I received a laugh and an "Over 5 hours, like usual" Good course but entirely out of control. Go play twice somewhere else.

Played the course yesterday and unfortunately cant recommend it right now. I think Tilden has some sort of grass disease or animal problem that is destroying the fairway grasses. Theres problems on nearly every hole. Id avoid playing Tilden till fall when hopefully theyll have their grass issues under control.

A GEM nestled in the Berkeley Hills! By far .. the best value in the Bay Area. Each hole has its own character. The Redwood Trees give the place a magical feel, and there are four tees to accomodate all levels of play. And the staff is very friendly as well!

Course doesnt have a good drainage system. If there is any rain at all expect super slow greens and expect to spend the majority of your round look for your ball buried in the mud in the middle of the fairway.
