The worst collection of irrelevant and unimpressive nonsense on the planet. Anyone giving a positive review of this crap is clearly involved with the museum. How it can even call itself a museum, let alone the Museum of the City of New York is beyond me. From what we saw there were 4 rooms in all. One dedicated to Yiddish cinema of the 40s, one to Tiffanys jewellery, one to a very unfunny socialist cartoonist and the other was empty....unless that was some arty statement about New York that I missed. In the hallway was the showpiece doll house, barely more impressive than the one we have at home that grandpa made. What a waste of time and $14. Weve been home for 2 months now and are still annoyed that we were sucked into this tourist trap ahead of seeing some other truly worthy sights. I challenge this museum to produce one genuine repeat visitor. What a misleading name for 3 rooms of completely wanky crap. Cant believe how angry I still am about being duped.

Exhibits: Great movie downstairs about how the city has changed over time, also maps throughout that show how things like wealth, pop density, and diversity have changed over the centuries. Other exhibits of good quality, for example one exhibit managed to make the citys zoning laws interesting (no small feat). Space: 3 small floors, not crowded, not too many kids. I went on a Saturday and although it wasnt too busy or too dead, the experience was kind of interrupted by a giant catering crew that was setting up for an evening event. I get it though, hosting that event makes more money. Gift store: 2 small ones, heavy on interesting books, other stuff that wasnt too tacky, decent price range. Food Court: None, also be aware that this area is kind of a restaurant desert. Whatever little place you do find nearby will be overpriced. Plan ahead.

Without a doubt, the Museum of the City of New York is one of my favorite arts and cultural institutions in New York City. It also happens to be one of the lesser-known ones, which makes for a less crowded experience, if you ask me. For any New Yorkers fervent about all aspects of our city, the Museum of the City of New York has an exhibit for you. Aside from the great exhibits which look into various aspects of New York Citys rich history and future, the structure itself which houses the Museum is architecturally stunning and there are many indoor elements worth seeing. The Museum also features a nice café and one of the all around best gift shops for New York themed gifts that I have ever encountered. Dont forget to check out the top floors, as theyre often overlooked.

The staff at reception will ask you to pay the suggested admission fee but will take whatever amount you wish to give. The museum only has three floors but it took me an entire afternoon to view all the exhibitions. I found it to be well-curated, with lots of interesting tidbits about the city, its colorful history, and global importance. The exhibit on the future of the city invites visitors to imagine innovations and solutions that will help address the citys current issues. There is also an exhibit on the evolution of the citys zoning laws, which affected how and where buildings were built. Finally, The Gay Gotham exhibits showed the history of the citys LGBT movement and the communitys cultural contributions through the work of influential LGBT personalities.

A very cool museum with a lot of interesting exhibits about the history of the city. It only starts with the Dutch founding new Amsterdam and focuses mostly on after the British take over. It glosses over most of the negatives in the history of NYC, but at least some of that is mentioned here and there. They have a good video that covers quite a bit of good information about the city. The rotating exhibits are good, and they move things around a bit sometimes. The future exhibit is the highlight for me, definitely worth checking out. My only suggestion for the museum is to talk to the security guards about manners, they are rude and pushy for no discernible reason. I would suggest visitors avoid them.

Great place to visit if you are interested in the history of NYC! As for the admission fee, it is suggested. If you are a frequent visitor, you might as well purchase a membership as it entitles you to discounts etc. In addition, there is a Young Members Circle membership for those who are 21-39 years of age for $100 per year, which is affordable relative to similar organizations, and provides you with access to exclusive events, outings, programs, and so forth geared toward rising professionals who live and/or work in NYC. Part of the museum is under construction and you cannot consume food or drink in the exhibition rooms (otherwise I would have given 5 stars).

Museum Of The City of New York - thank you for hosting the "Catching Up and Getting Ahead" - Wilson Reading System month long training during July 2016 for my daughter Jaz. While waiting for my daughter to complete her training, I took the opportunity to roam around the museum learning about NYC. This small cozy museum is a fraction of the American Museum of Natural History with so much packed in here. The staffs are friendly and extremely helpful. My favorite places to visit were the Timescape movie, the ROZ CHAST exhibit, LOST IN OLD NY, the Court Yard, and the cafe.

This museum was full of interesting, relevant and interactive exhibits that I cant wait to go see again. Are you fighting the good fight or participating in the resistance? Go see the history of activist movements in nyc exhibit. Do you have incredible ideas about how to improve New York City, want to understand a bit more about urban planning or just play with virtual reality games? Check out the future New York exhibit. My favorite? The most interesting stairwell in the world. At the very top of the museum mile, this is for museum lovers and haters alike.

The MCNY has informative and interesting exhibits and a great collection of photographs and ephemera related to the city of New York. The collections available for researchers are not yet thoroughly cataloged, but the staff are friendly and will help you locate what you need. They seem have a good deal of early 20th century material (including a Black Crook collection and several libretti for the Cohan musical "Little Johnny Jones"). They also have a number of theatrical costumes and other theatrical costumes. I recommmend stopping here in a tour of NYC.
