There must be two very different Shawnee Inns: one full of charm and style that gets five (!) star reviews and the one I stayed at. Since I didnt see the five star place, I cant review it, but I can talk about the one star hotel I stayed at. The grounds and building exteriors were ok and the golf course didnt look bad. The views up and down the river from the lawn were very nice. Inside, the lobby showed its age, but was in good shape. Breakfast was edible. The rest wasnt. Short list: Lobby mens room: nasty; I have to admit the obviously drunk wedding party may have contributed, but then again, they had an obviously drunk wedding party... Meeting room: tired finishes; peeling wallpaper Game room: moldy and broken (everything in the room as far as I can tell) Pool: tiles falling off the side; amazed it holds water; but my son liked it. Room issues Room door: stuck closed Bathroom door: would not close; doorstop also broken Bathroom: no vanity; scary loud toilet Bathroom window: stuck closed; no vent fan either Closet: giant walk-in maybe 20% the size of the room. Three hangers. Coffee pot: on a giant shelf in the giant closet with nowhere to plug in Bedroom window: stuck closed and covered in a translucent film so you cant see through it; didnt matter that much as this hotel right next to the river would have provided me a great view of the parking lot had I been able to see through the window Desk: no chair; didnt matter since there wasnt enough room for one Iron: nowhere to plug in (but I wasnt planning to iron anyway) Surface run wiring for lights and outlets everywhere but the giant closet which had no outlets but did have a crappy florescent wall light that somehow ended up with the wiring run in the wall. WIFI: weak and slow. Wall coverings: peeling and dated Furniture: old. Not antique, just old.

Review of golf course only: I had known about Shawnee for a while - A.W. Tillinghast design, host of the 1938 PGA Championship, etc. - but never quite made the trip out there. The November off season golf rates were too good to pass up, so I got a foursome together and played the Red-White course. The hotel/clubhouse had historical photos of famous golfers and celebrities who have played or stayed there throughout the years which I thought was pretty neat, and brought a certain charm and mystique to the place. The staff also could not have been nicer. The course was in very good condition. Nice lay out, beautiful scenery, and a slew of great and memorable golf holes. Theres a lot of variety in both length and style; a few long par 4s, drive and pitch holes; some great par 3s, and nice doglegs. Its not incredibly long, but you still need every club in the bag. Theres also a good amount of water and you have to respect every shot on the course, but nothing about it is overly penalizing or unfair if you ask me. I loved the greens! They are generally smaller - a common characteristic in Tillinghast designs - and had some very interesting contour. You will not see too many straight putts on this course, and it demands a little bit more from your short game at times. Its a solid test of golf - challenging but fair and a lot of fun to play. Beginners may struggle particularly with a few of the water hazards that come into play as well as on or around the greens, but I honestly still think golfers of all skill levels could enjoy it. I was absolutely delighted to have played at Shawnee, and I have more than enough enthusiasm about this golf course to come back and play it again sometime. I definitely recommend playing it.

This place isnt historical conservation or anything of the sort, its just outdated, old, and worn. There was no rustic inn charm to this place, including inside the rooms. We booked a regular king room and it was tiny. Im talking 80 square feet tiny with 36 square feet for the bathroom tiny. With a room this small you can fit a lot of guests in the hotel, and they didnt spare any money to soundproof. Doors connecting to other guests rooms which means you hear everything your neighbor does. We asked to see a different room because our neighbors were noisy. The second room was quiet but right outside the second floors lobby which wouldve been loud in the morning, so we spent the extra $70 a night for a suite (it was our wedding anniversary after all). It was quiet! Except for the hotel staff. We were placed right next to the cleaning staffs supply closet, so every morning at 8:15AM we got woken up by people talking about their personal lives quite loudly. I poked my head out the door to ask them to be a little quieter and they only got louder, both days. The heating for the suite also wasnt enough to heat the room, while there were two units in the room only one functioned and it was not near the bed so we were quite chilly during our Winter stay. A three night stay was over $500 at this place and we had a terrible experience. Spend your money wisely, go somewhere else.

Staff is extremely professional and helpful. The property and views are stunning. The pool is huge with 3 ft. Shallows and 10 ft. Deep end. The Inn has that early 1900s feel and look. Beautiful, intriguing, tons of history. But, along with that look comes dated rooms and lobby. There are many paint cracks and chips throughout the whole building. Light fixtures are dated and arent taken care of as often as they should if the staff are going for that older look. Renovations are a must. I stayed on the second floor. The room was nice and cozy. But, on the website, it was stated that there would be a microwave and there wasnt. I normally wouldnt have complained about this amenity not being present except for the fact that I was expecting it. The bathroom is the part that needed the most renovation. My bathroom didnt even have an exhaust fan or window. Talk about a steam room. You better also flush the toilet often if you had too many cups of coffee. On a nicer note, the bed was the best bed I have ever slept on. And dont get me started on the sheets and pillow! These are the nicest sheets and blankets Ive ever used. The room is super clean and welcoming. I would absolutely come back and stay for more than just two nights. Lovely place with amazing views and staff. Other than dated rooms, I would recommend this to anyone and everyone I know! Thank you Shawnee Inn!

My stay at Shawnee Inn May 28-31 was horrible, on May 30th the lights went out around 4 PM until just around 11 PM . The Inn never came and knocked on my door with an explanation. So my gust and myself sat in the room until about 6:30 still nothing from the Inn. At this point we grabbed a book and tablets and went down to the lobby where some gust had gathered . We was told the lights would be back on at 7,8 , 9, 10 Pm no management was to be found . Some gust upon return from where ever said the road where so dark and you couldnt see far. So around 10:30 pm we asked for flashlights and went up stairs for bed . There was one light in the hallway . You would think the next morning the Inn would have offered free breakfast or something. I went to check out and asked to speak with a manager , none was around so I told the girl at the front desk I wouldnt pay my room tax and some manager should call me, no one ever did . I look at my checking account on line and you people charged me $35.73. I want my money back and then sum for sitting in the dark for almost 6 hrs with nothing in the area open for dinner. Shame on Shawnee Inn for those of us sitting in the lobby with three lamps on and no food to eat , we was asked if we wanted any wine(red only). Something should be done for us.
