Saw Dec 008 "Biglittlethings" Show The last IMAGO show I saw was in the mid 80s. It was a brilliant and creative show in which almost every skit delighted with its visual poetry and well-developed skit narratives. The current show is clearly an amateur production of 5 performers. All skits rely primarily on their interesting costumes - Rabbits, Hippos, Fish and so on. The problem is the costumes make for great posters and ads - no way to know that the performance behind is average at best. The best thing about the show as the repeated use of the blacklight format. Several of the pieces were very nice visually: colored butterflies, great big snakes and fish really were eye catching, but one remained disappointed by the sophomoric lack of sophistication in the storyline or "narrative." Such potential never to be realized in the show. This is not a problem for a child of 6 who is delighted simply that the "polar bear" leaves the stage and climbs into the audience. Engaging but not really a performance. So, in the end this is a show which will primarily appeal to children, yet has 40% skits which are not understood nor interesting to children. The skits aimed at the adult falter due to poor development. A mime with rabbits hitchhiking because they lock themselves out of the car may sound great, but is in the end not very interesting in reality. It is hard to write these words when I wish to support local performance groups, but one needs to know prior to attending a show (and paying $28) that it is an amateur production at best.

The big family-oriented shows are fun and worth seeing (though a little pricey for us). The small experimental shows and productions like "No Exit" are the ones that keep us coming back. Not all of the experiments are successful, but theyre always interesting - and the ones that do succeed are knock-outs.

This place is awesome. The actors are talented, there is a great snack and drink selection, and the props and puppets are very well built.
