After reading wonderful reviews about this museum, I decided to travel to detroit to experience the city and this for myself. Traveling for me is a hobby, and this is by far the WORST museum I have ever seen. There is a reason why they do not allow photography inside, if they did, no one would go. The best part of the museum is that they have actual articles of clothing that were worn by Michael Jackson during performances. Aside from those THREE items, everything else is a photo or an old record. Your ten dollars is best spent someplace else, like towards the Henry Ford Museum, a REAL museum that has attractions like the actual limo that President Kennedy was assassinated in, or the Rosa Parks bus and much more. In addition to that, the museums website is incredibly misleading. For example, the gift shop items look a 1000 x better online than in the store. A lot of the items in print are simply photoshopped poor quality images that are marked up in price significantly. NEVER AGAIN.

This place is something you HAVE to do if you visit Detroit. Save yourself the trouble and order your tickets online. Try to go early so you can easily find a space to park. Theres no parking lot. You have to park on the street. The gift shop is expensive. I wanted to buy something but Im such a cheapskate and I couldnt even justify the cost of the refrigerator magnet. I adored our tour guide she was friendly, knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Being in the same place where the Temptations and Martha and the Vandellas stood and sang was EVERYTHING! I learned a lot and I got excited about being in Motor City. Ive always thought it should be a public policy that every public building in Detroit should pipe in Motown music exclusively! Theres so many hits. The tour is totally worth the ticket price and I plan to go again with my sisters (my background singers) so we can perform !

Need better business decisions. They turn drives of people away saying they sold out of tickets. It would be smarter to charge people at the door and let them tour the place themselves or hire 2 more staff and charge people an additional $5 per ticket. Businesses in Detroit cant afford to turn people away, I saw at least 20 people get turned away in the hour I was there. They lost $300 in an hour because of bad business practices, Im a business owner so it drives me nuts. Not to mention I was there for a conference, conference had over 2500 people and they didnt invite the people from the conference. I would ask the conference center to make the tour a part of their package. At least 100 people from the conference told me they were also turned away. Sad! People just take pics outside then leave.

A detroit must see. Not really any parking, but its no big deal to walk. Didnt wait too long because we were there on a dead weekday. No cameras or phones allowed, which is totally understandable for copyright and all that. Really incredible history and music took place here, and its amazing to see it all restored to its original condition. It perfectly preserved historical musical and political movements for the motown musicians, and is something to see. Our tour guide was incredble. I cant remember her name, she was a little shorter, had very short, hair, and had an incredible singing voice. She knew her stuff, and was enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the museum. She made the tour even better.

My husband & myself visited the museum with 2 friends 01-15-11 the tour guide was wonderful admission price is reasonable however the gift shop does not offer a good selection of quaility merchandise they have over priced t-shirts & cheap costume jewlery & because you are not allowed to take photos you would expect for the gift shop to sell quaility merchandise and should offer a better varity. My husband was disappoint with how the area around the museum is so unkepted we thought we were lost when the GPS was directing us to the museum . Needs an overview of gift shop & I did not see any place for toddlers ,people had their children with them & you are not allowed to touch anything.

I lived here for 7 years and never went to the museum. Boy did I miss out! I am 57 years old and have always loved Motown music! What Barry Gordy did in that small house was amazing! The talent that Detroit had in the area is truly tremendous! I learned a few things about the stars of Motown that I did not know! These people were an amazing group of such talented individuals and groups that might never be matched again!! The recording studio was so primitive but that was the technology of the times. To be in the same space as Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross and the Supremes, Marvin Gaye, Martha and the Vandellas was amazing! If you get a chance to go, dont pass on it!!

I had a good time today at Motown with my baby brother we enjoyed ourselves we have fun I hope Barry Gordy, Diana Ross, Smokey Robinson, and all the legend come back and make some more new music we need some love in this world an arrest of the people who lived here made Motown great its time to come home you have work to do only professionals like you can do it. I hope they come back building a new Motown recording studio in Detroit and produce new music here find new stars here and Detroit people are very talented and pass the torch play music and sing and make Motown great again thank you it was very wonderful to spend the day with my brother at Motown

Cool to stand where greatness was created. You will not see much memorabilia, wax statues, or cgi replicas of the dozens of artists that recorded on Motown. You will, however, stand in the real studio where classics from the tops, temptations, Jackson 5, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, Martha and the Vandellas and so many more created the soundtrack for our lives. The tour guide is entertaining and informative, the short video provides some context for the whole experience. The walk through Barry Gordys upstairs apartment is a travel through time. Youll need about an hour for the guided tour. Young kids are free (yet not much for them to see/do).

"Hitsville U.S.A.", aka the Motown Museum, is where the heart and soul of Detroit musical tradition resides. Currently housed in its original house on W. Grand Blvd, the museum offers chill inducing tours of the humble space where Motown legends were born. As you walk through the halls, and especially into the studio, you are overcome by greatness. This is unlike any other tour, and can be a very emotional experience! If you would like to partake in this intimate experience make sure you visit soon!! The museum just announced an exciting huge expansion that will get under way soon.

The history behind Motown records is an amazing story of resilience and family values. Berry Gordy started with an $800 loan from his family Bank, to create Tamara records which then turned into Motown Records. He had to pay the loan back within a year at 6% interest. Something that should be done to this very day. Studio way was spell bounding to know that all the artist who made Motown great actually recorded there. Nothing short of amazing and well worth the trip and the little amount of money it cost to get a amazing guided tour our tour guide Jordan was the best.
