My favorite zoo of all.... EMPTY! a nice place to stretch while youre getting ready for your hike and good place for the picnic.. Unexpected wildlife, like deer and coyotes.... Its urban and natural. Lots of shade on a hot day.....I love it .. people come from all over to see the graffiti art in the hidden stairwells they even shot a episode of Americas next top model in them .... keep in mind the mostly young artist risk their criminal records to share and exhibit their art .... We ran into a 5 kids with backpacks and skateboards in their teens being given citations .... I was sadden cause I was just admiring the art they left behind.... But chuckled at the diversity of the crew... They appeared to be a UN of artist Asian, Hispanic and Jewish kids. I knew this because I heard the park ranger mocking them ... Im not for graffiti in any other areas of the park other then the hidden stairwells and think if the young artist were given the opportunity to burn a stairwell by random selection Los Angeles , the young artist, the visitors and the community could coexist in a time when the arts have been taken from the American classroom.

The old remnants of the zoo that once was. Its very seldom for a place that is very different from literally everywhere else and this is one of those places. You are able to go into the enclosures and cages where animals once lived. Its a nice, clean spot where you have many golden opportunities for photography. The parking lot has ample parking and youll just head up the stairs or the ramp up to the park! And as a general rule, still try to come at golden hour as the light is not too harsh. The best areas for photography and shoots are the enclosures and cages which is on the same walkway. No need to venture into the trail because youll come to a open small building with some graffiti and then you have another cage which is not photogenic as the other areas. Also there is no shade besides inside the enclosures so be careful when its really hot! Be aware of needles, broken glass and areas that smell like pee.

The trail starts near the Crystal Springs Ranger Headquarters, past an old wooden carousel, up through the chaparral to Bee Rock and through the ruins of the Old L.A. Zoo. Watch out for the ghost of Dona Petronilla watching from the window and a ghostly man descending a nearby staircase. If you see a man on horseback, run. Human spirits might spare you. The tormented spirits of the caged animals in the zoo are not so forgiving.

This evening. I was doing my walk. Around the old zoo. When i see four adults. And a mother with a baby on the stroller . Doing graffiti on the old zoo caves. At the time that i seen that i did not feel safe. We need more police at that park. For sure i will not return for a while .

I remember this place when I was a kid. I still have old 8mm movie film our family took when we came to the old zoo back in the early 1960s. I just wish the city of Los Angeles would preserve this piece of city history.

Was here for a Movie shoot. Old Eerie cages of the (circa 1960) Los Angeles Zoo. The next step is the current LA Zoo will most likely go bye-bye like all the other zoos that are closing throughout the world.

Funny place to visit. Not much to see anymore. You can however get a nice view of the city, good luck finding the spot in front of the old house that you probably shouldnt go into.
