First of all, this is definitely a hipster spot but not a pretentious one as anyone and everyone is welcomed here. There will be live music on most nights on the first floor and the second floor. Then, theres Thursday cheap well drink night. If you pay in cash, your well mixed drink could cost as little as $1 a drink. Whats not to love about that as they also have great patio in the front and backyard? As many have stated and obviously noticeable, Avant Garden was a house, well still is, but converted to a bar. Now theres a small gravel parking lot but I wouldnt gamble on finding a spot there as it is most likely full. Theres also a taco truck that serves food for people who gets the late night hunger. Now I think the most beautiful part of this establishment is definitely the backyard. Its hard to imagine that at one point there was no awesome custom built canopy cover with strings of light, lanterns, etc. hanging from it. Theres a total of 3 bars, one outside in the backyard, one inside on the first floor, and one on the second floor. Again, I have mostly come here for the Thursday cheap well drink, where you get a plastic cup and you got to keep that for the night as they use it for re-fills. The service has been good and they have great beers on tap. The music has been great so far as well. Now even with the big industrial fans in the backyard, it still get humid and hot at night out there. But when you are drinking and having a good chat with friends or newly made friends, no one cares that youre sweating like crazy. I would certainly go back to this place for a chill patio, cool live music, and cheap drinks and I would highly recommend you try to find parking in the neighborhood instead of waiting for someone to get out of their lot for a space. But one warning is that if you are parking in the nearby neighborhood, read the signs and use the Houston neighborhood parking rule, if the parking spot looks too good to be true, it may will be.

AvantGarden only bar Ive been to in Houston and legitimately thought a curse was put on me. But I dont say that in a bad way. The place has character. And you will find some of the best people watching here. Such as this girl who came up, with a cloak on and a flower in her hair and asked to bum a cigarette from my friend and in return, we would get a gift. What was the gift? A "poem." But we are still convinced it was a curse. But that curse was worth it because you wouldnt get that anywhere else in Houston, that I know of. So besides the people watching, the place is still really awesome. Its an old house transformed into a bar. It has a huge patio and backyard area with another bar out there, in addition to one downstairs and one upstairs inside the house. There is usually a band performing, stand up comedy, or some other fun event going on. Thursday nights are especially popular because they have dollar wells (cash only unfortunately), no cover, and good crowds. They also have a resident taco truck to help cure your late night munchies, drunk or otherwise. If dive bars are your thing, AvantGarden is definitely worth checking out. Even if dive bars arent your thing, you have to check Avant out at least once. Just avoid the girl dishing out curses...

Maybe to just hang out at for the evening but NOT a good option if you want to have an even there!!! Ive contacted the owner Mariana in ALL possible ways for several events and have NEVER gotten an answer back! I love the space but its extremely unprofessional! I tried emailing, calling (left voicemail), facebook messaging (read it, no response!), texted the managers cell number as the bartender suggested (no reply!), and tried showing up to see if Id catch her but no luck! Id take it personal but the woman hasnt even met me. Just to be clear, this didnt happen in one occasion. I gave her the benefit of doubt and thought maybe shed just had a bad or busy month. So for the next event I thought of using her venue I tried again and still nothing! This happened a total of 3 times and now Im just upset!

Our wedding here was fabulous. We loved every moment of it, from the ceremony until the final send off. The venue came through for us meeting every expectation. Everything was super easy! The pros: Its a beautiful and unique venue in the middle of the city. It is affordable for all you get (we went with the highest package) The pictures came out beautiful both during the day and night. the staff is friendly. The food truck was great! The only con is that it was quite hot outside. We chose to have our wedding in the summer ( September 4, 2016) and it was very humid because it rained a lot in the morning before our wedding. The 8 fans the venue provided helped but it cooled off at night and by 9 PM everybody was dancing! Thanks Avant garden for everything!

This is truly a hidden gem in the Montrose district. With great music and both indoor and outdoor seating this is what Houston has been missing out on! Not only does AvantGarden have indoor/outdoor seating they also have a bar outside that makes your decision on where to seat even easier. Great drink specials and atmosphere make AvantGarden the place to be on a cool Friday or Saturday evening. They have a super small parking lot for their guests only with a food truck out front keeping you from getting hammered and stumbling across Westheimer. Load up your girl/guy friends and check this place out, great late night spot.

Eccentric montrose venue with 2 bars, 3 when the upstairs is being used. Made out of a large old house, beautiful courtyard with shrubbery, fountains, and pleasant lighting outside. If youre looking for up and coming musicians, theyll be playin here several nights of the week. +The Goddammit Comedy Show is a free weekly comedy show every Thurs. Night from 9-11 pm followed by a free show. Run by Gabe Bravo and Gavin Burr, it features some of Houstons best comics. Not to mention front row sitters get free shots from Gabe <3

Beer selection can be original, including local and regional. Bar tenders are hot/cold -- a few are superior and sometimes with indifferent attitudes. The bathrooms are very poor, including sometimes no locks with no open/close warning. The space depends on the event -- some crowds are very open and warming; some crowds are just angry and rush one crowd out as soon as possible. Taco truck is great. Always go for tacos. Parking is poor, but valet tries best they can. Please always tip the valet!

This place is amazing. A bar during the week, with fun and quirky music, open mic nights, and comedy shows. Relaxed atmosphere, great sangria, cheap drinks. The staff us super friendly. On the weekends it is a wedding venue. I actually had my wedding here a few weeks ago and they were amazing. The owner Mariana is amazing, and so sweet. She helped me from day one make sure my day would be perfect and she nailed it. Very LGBT friendly. I recommend this place for the everyone to check out!

I toured this venue for our wedding and it was beautiful and very artsy. Exactly what I wanted. Mariana was willing to work with us to make it exactly how I wanted. It unfortunately is not ideal for handicapped people and I ended up choosing another location. The only other downside is the parking. Very small parking lot and then it costs extra to use another parking lot down the street. But I really wish I couldve had this location because it is so me!!
