Wow! What a fabulous Long Island experience. The museum presents a wonderful combination of history and art. We spent hours there and will go back again. We especially liked the art museum. The Mount brothers from Long Island are truly world class artists, and there is no other Mount collection on earth as comprehensive as the what the LI Museum has. The labels wonderfully explaining the context of the works. And dont miss the painting "The Wreck of the Mexico," by JF Pringle (1837). It depicts a true-life scene that Walt Whitman -- coincidentally -- wrote about in the poem "Sleepers" in "Leaves of Grass." The painting shows 100 immigrants on a shipwreck off Long Beach, all about to freeze to death. It is a tragic, heart-wrenching scene.

I have not been to this museum in over 20 years. It has changed and expanded. The exhibition of carriages is extensive. I think it would enhance the experience to have docent tours once or twice a day. As there is so much to see in the carriage exhibit halls that it becomes overwhelming reading all the placards. There also is an a separate art museum and art installations on the property. The mobile sculptures and the crocheted tree cover art installation were impressive.

Had a great time. Staff was friendly and helpful not only about the museum but about local events and establishments of interest. The carriage displays were very interesting and well displayed. The bootleg display was informative as wer e the restored buildings and content. Would recommend to anyone looking for a pleasant, at your own pace experience.

The Long Island Museum in Stony Brook offers excellent exhibits in a quiet setting. Though it isnt a huge museum like the Natural History Museum, the exhibits are chock full of information about Long Islands past. The staff is knowledgeable and courteous and trips there are always fun and educational.

Thought i would spend an hour visiting, stayed for three and Im planning my return visit. Great if you love local Long Island history or history in general. The Art House was being renovated but I was able to walk in to the entry and peek at some neat stuff. Military discount available.

Make sure you leave yourself plenty of time when you come here. I seem to always come within an hour or two of closing, and I dont like being asked to leave "early". It must be because it is so close to home?
