This National Memorial somehow seems to fly under the radar in NYC. I guess that is what happens when a city is so full of things to do. This is one of my favorite spots to bring visitors because it is in a great area (close to the Hudson River, parks, and Columbia University) that isnt as congested with locals or tourists. Every time we have been here there have only been a handful of people. The exterior of the memorial is quite impressive and the interior is beautiful as well. The actual sarcophagi are downstairs in a dimly lit area that actually seems understated. There is just enough Civil War/U.S. Grant historical information provided to whet your appetite; of course, these topics are far too big to be completely addressed in one memorial. The only reason I didnt give it 5 stars is because the open hours are a bit weird (perhaps because of budget cuts?). I recommend checking hours of operation in advance. There have been times when we happened to go there but werent able to go in.

Growing up nearby, when I first learned that this was the final resting place of Ulysses S. Grant, the 18th President of the United States, I was both curious and creeped out. The neighborhood and the tomb were in decay back then and I couldnt understand why someone would come here to "rest". Today, Grants Tomb is a serene and beautiful destination. Located on grounds that are fit to honor such a significant historical figure. As with all other national presidential memorials, admission is free. However, the mausoleum is open to visitors only on select days. Check the website to plan your visit. And dont forget to bring your camera and or a blanket for having a picnic.

"Grants Tomb" as this monument is known to locals, is a remarkable national site. Today Grant is considered something of a failure as president and a very important, but not particularly genius general, but in his day he was considered to be the greatest hero of the Civil War, and a president who the majority of Americans were proud of. This monument reflects what Americans of his age thought of him. Its a grand, prestigious and patriotic mosoleum. Both the general and his wife are "buried" here, or rather, their marble caskets are on display here. I really like this beautiful monument, which is quite close to Columbia University

Grants Tomb was one of the first places I saw on my very first visit to New York in my teenage years. Now decades later I decided to visit it a week before moving out of New York City. I approached the south-facing entrance of the mausoleum and walked up the stairs, only to discover that it was closed for the day. So I snapped some photographs and walked across the street to visit Riverside Church, just one block south of Grants Tomb. I think that it is very impressive and it definitely looks good in this park-like setting, visible from quite a distance, and it is very close to Riverside Park and the Hudson River.

I havnt got yet expérience on that Memorial but I studied a lot of books about Civil war and Grant in particular. Grant was a great man who had to fight with his hierarchy to reach the role he had at the end of war. before him the grade was granted on the position in the society rather than on competence. He has been recognized as a great general by its great tactics plans during its fighting in the West, along the Mississippi. Its role was not made to be president, but by its high quality to be a fair man wishing above everything to restore the unity of the country

Great free place to check out if you are in West Harlem. They have odd hours so I would check the website/call ahead. I find myself taking history buffs that visit me to this memorial because they tend to enjoy the memorial and the walk thru Riverside Park. Its never crowded and you can walk through the whole thing in less that fifteen minutes. Dont forget to check out other nearby attractions when you visit. Wouldnt really recommend coming all the way up here unless you are a local or have things planned in the area.

This is a very simple tribute to a man who is greater than I anticipated. After visiting the Memorial, you should go to the visitors center to be surprised at how little you probably know about this general and US President. There is a short film about his military service and his Presidency. The whole settings looks out over the Hudson and is surrounded by greenery. No horns or constant, noisy cars. A truly serene spot in a busy city. I can only say to the US National Park Service, "WELL DONE." Thank you.

A quiet reflection for a cigarette break (cant smoke in International House: Kim Chi and cigarettes would be non-kosher). CAN A MD OR JD WITHOUT BASIC MILITARY TRAINING BE A GENERAL? WHATEVER HAPPENS TO TRASH TALKERS ABOUT PARATROOPERS W/O (AA) ON SHOULDER ON C130 SAFETY BELT LIKE CARRIBENA ONCE THE REAR RAMP OPENS? DONT ONE FLY UP 30 STOREYS UPON PULLING JETPACK TO CLEAR RPG INCONING F157 OR NEED SNORKLE TO STAY BRAIN UNDEAD? 3 US NPS RANGERS NOT SECRET SERVICE CAUSE NOT PRESIDENT?

Not simply a tomb for the 18th President but also a testament to his beliefs and respect for all citizens. The Junior Ranger program is on the easier side and takes about an hour. Most answers can be found by exploring the tomb, but a few ate hidden in the visitor center across the street. Since you need to get the booklet there best to start with the film and then get as many answers from small exhibit there before going up to the tomb.

Definitely worth going and visiting gave you a lot to think about. Lovely grounds and structure. To think that Grant and his wife are almost within touch is amazing. I guess it could have been more educational but its not a museum. What I dont understanding is why there were busts of his fellow Generals in the same room as the caskets? Since they were there , why were there no information about who they were and their relationship?

A beautiful and respectful memorial to a National Hero. Most important when you plan your visit - the memorial is only open every other hour, so make sure you visit the website in advance so you know when to arrive. The visitors center is across the street and down the stairs and the exhibit space, though small, is nice, so make sure you walk through the gift shop to find the history of the life of a really interesting individual.
