Breathtaking views of the Hudson River valley, and great views of the zappan zee, which was built on one of the former two forts build in 1776 at the atart of the American Revolution. Fort Montgomery is the one remaining fortification with many activities for kids and families, like exploring the grounds and learning about the battles from the artifacts and buildings preserved throughout the fort, and also at the visitors center located right at the entrance that can accommodate parking.

Painted by David Johnson (1827-1908). This image reflects fully the bounty and beauty of the River and the Valley. Inhabitants tend flocks amidst cleared, fertile land, boats make use of the easy passage, and Anthonys Nose and Bear Mountain provide daily inspiration. This work is more of an Old World style than what emerged later in the Hudson River school; here man is an active part, and beneficiary, of the scene.

Went to the annual lantern tour last night (10-26-2013) with family and had a great time, it was intelligent, interesting and not without some surprises. The tour is a walk through the fort in the context of a historical recreation. I plan on going again.

A very neat place to stop and catch some nice views and neat history. Its also free parking if you want to walk over to the zoo or around Bear Mountain. The parking lot does close early, though, so dont get stuck!

Wild About Nature
Great for walking and to learn about the revolutionary war. There are remains and ruins still there as for a little further you can pop across the Popolopen Creek to the Trailside museum and zoo which is great.

Great area with lots of history and views of the bear mountain bridge. Great footbridge nearby that will lead to a trail that will take you under the bear mountain bridge and the best mountain trailside zoo.

Great place to park for hiking Bear Mt and Popolopen Torne but it does close early. The overflow parking is just past this and is a good alternative if you know youll be staying later than 5pm.
